New Day Prayer

New Life
New Life

By Stephen W. Hiemstra

Almighty and Merciful Father,

I praise you for the daily sunrise,

the birth of the new day

when your glory sparkles and warms and

invites us to rethink who we are and

learn again to be surprised.

Forgive me for getting stuck in a moment,

forgetting who I am and

undervaluing the promises that you have made

to bless and make new.

Thank you for beautiful reminders

that chase away the shadows and

bring the chance to start over.

In the power of your Holy Spirit.

grant me the strength to face the young day

with joy and thanksgiving and

the deep peace that only you can bring.

Remember those that suffer and

may I also lessen their burden.

In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Prayer of Faith

CloudsBy Stephen W. Hiemstra

Merciful father:

All praise, honor, and glory are yours,

Lord who cares for me–

for my mind is clouded and

my heart betrays me,

but you are ever with me, for me, and uplifting me

even when I am lost and alone,

not even knowing what to confess.

Thank you for your presence

amidst the storms of  daily life and

the torments of spirits that would consume me.

Of all the things that I have experienced

you are the most immediate, most real

and I thank you for it.

In the power of your Holy Spirit,

grant me now a full measure of faith

that I might remember my baptism and your resurrection

all the days of my life and

ever confess that you are Lord of my life and

all that is, was, or will ever be.

In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Heavenly Father, Beloved Son, Spirit of Truth,

All praise and honor be to you,

Lord of my coming and going,

the one in who I can truly trust.

I confess that some days my heart is broken

and none but you will do

for my sins are too numerous

and my trust in others is too fleeting for my heart to bear.

Thank you for giving me a new day and bearing me up

so that I can face new trials and know that you are closer than my beating heart.

Be my North Star once again.

In the power of your Holy Spirit,

grant me strength for the day, grace for those I meet, and peace.

In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Prayer for the Kids

Almighty father,

We praise you for creating us, male and female, in your image (Gen 1:27)

so that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female. (Gal 3:28 ESV)

We confess that we have not always lived into your image promise or even wanted to.

We give thanks that you have not given up on us, but sent Christ to show us how to live,

ransomed us from our own sinful folly, and given us the hope of salvation and eternal life with you.

We pray that our kids will remember the lessons that we so painfully learned,

but mostly that we learned to trust in you.

In the power of your Holy Spirit, grant us the strength to continue living another year,

the grace to reach out to those around us, and

the peace that passes all understanding (Phil 4:7).

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5. Prayers of a Life in Tension by Stephen W. Hiemstra

Prayers_of_a_Life_in_Tension_webAlmighty Father, Beloved Son, Holy Spirit,
We praise you for being willfully present in our lives—present when we are paying attention and present when we are not. We confess our need for holiness—let your example shine through us. We confess the need to be reconciled with those that pain us and those we pain. We confess that we are too often attracted more to culture and less to you. We thank you for the witness of your son, Jesus Christ, and many spiritual gifts showered on us by your Holy Spirit. Grant us strength for the day, grace for those we meet along the way, and peace when peace seems distant.  In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
