Praying for Strength

Ten K
Lansing, Michigan, 1983

By Stephen W. Hiemstra

Almighty and Merciful Father,

For the strength you give us, the healing you lavish on us, and the shelter you offer us from many storms, we give you glory and honor.

We confess that we are weak, sin-sick, and blind to many fiascos of our own making.

But we thank you for your healing presence day and night. We thank you for modeling strength in the midst of chaos and wisdom in the midst of all foolishness. In the power of your Holy Spirit, grant us strength for the day, grace for those we meet, and peace that our hearts would never be troubled.

In Jesus’s precious name, Amen.

Prayer for Strength and Protection

Almighty and Omniscient Father,

All glory and honor are yours for you protect me from hidden dangers and from temptations that would destroy me.

Forgive me for harboring so many weaknesses and yielding so quickly to  every snare and pit that Satan lays in my path–the hidden pride, the sin I ignore, and my impatience with life.

Thank you for your hedge of protection that guards my heart and mind, keeping me focused on you, and sparing me the pain and death of those around me.

In the power of your Holy Spirit, grant me the strength and desire to honor your healthy boundaries and to live within your will for my life. Remind me daily of my baptism and to keep my heart pure, ever prepared for communion with you and the church.

In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Prayer for a Steady Hand

Target practiceBy Stephen W. Hiemstra

Almighty father,

All glory and honor are yours, Lord,

for you are my fortress

and your presence the hand on my shoulder.

Why do I fear? Why does my grip falter?

I confess that my faith hangs by a thread

for I know that some day my strength will fail

and my only hope is in you.

Thank you for a new day and the opportunity to serve in your name.

In the power of your Holy Spirit,

grant me the strength to be the person that you created me to be

and to be fully present to those around me, each and every day.

In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Prayer for Congruity

Winter Trees by Sharron Beg
Winter Trees by Sharron Beg (www.threadpaintersart.blogspot.com)

Merciful father,

How long must I wait to see your face more clearly?

To feel your hand on my shoulder and know that I have served you well?

My soul longs to hear your voice over the chaos of life

and to sense your passion over creation.

Be especially present in this time and place.

Open hearts and minds in this dismal land.

Save us from the stupor of a life lived poorly and out of harmony with your will for us.

In the power of your Holy Spirit, grant me strength for the day;  grace for those I meet; and peace,

the peace that passes all understanding.

In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Doldrums Prayer for Strength and Guidance

Doldrums, Sand Dune in Ocean City, MarylandBy Stephen W. Hiemstra

Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Holy Spirit,

Remain especially near to me in the doldrums of life,

when the wind is not in my sails and

the sea remains placid and listless, devoid of life.

Let me not sin out of boredom,

let me not wander into danger for lack of direction, energy, or anxiety.

Give me a fishman’s sense of when to cut bait and when to go fishing.

Let me innovate when stuck in the middle of a transition,

when the good old days have passed and

the future remains uncertain.

Teach me to number my days aright that I might a heart of wisdom. (Ps 90:12)

That I might live into my baptism each and every day.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Prayer for Strength

Oak Tree in Oakton, VirginiaBy Stephen W. Hiemstra

Holy Father,

I praise you for creating me.

For giving me life and health and all the many blessings of family.

I confess that I have not always used time wisely and not always made the best lifestyle choices.

Thank you for another day–I have learned not to take them for granted.

The gift of time is precious to me; help me to make good use of it.

and, above all, to be a faithful steward of it.

Thank you for good health–I have learned not to it for granted.

The gift of health is a prerequisite for everything else that I do;

help me not to abuse it.

In the power of your Holy Spirit, I ask for strength.

Strength to make good choices.

Strength to be a witness, a good father, and a loving spouse.

Strength just to deal with all the many challenges of this life.

Strength like an oak that grows straight and tall and sturdy.

Strength in Jesus’ name, for “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13 ESV)

Amen.

5. Prayers of a Life in Tension by Stephen W. Hiemstra

Prayers_of_a_Life_in_Tension_webAlmighty Father, Beloved Son, Holy Spirit,
We praise you for being willfully present in our lives—present when we are paying attention and present when we are not. We confess our need for holiness—let your example shine through us. We confess the need to be reconciled with those that pain us and those we pain. We confess that we are too often attracted more to culture and less to you. We thank you for the witness of your son, Jesus Christ, and many spiritual gifts showered on us by your Holy Spirit. Grant us strength for the day, grace for those we meet along the way, and peace when peace seems distant.  In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Almighty Father. We praise you for creating of heaven and earth, creating all that is, was, or will ever be, and creating all things seen and unseen. We look out on your creation and just praise your name. Keep us safe in your hands: seal our hearts; strengthen our minds; and shelter our bodies from all evil. In our hour of weakness, may we ever turn only to you. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
